First impressions: surprisingly decent

The Grand Aquarium opened a few years ago. It's big. Really big.

The building looks modern. Glass and steel. The car park is dusty. Standard for Hurghada.

We arrived at 10am. Not too busy. The ticket queue moved fast. Twenty dollars for adults. Ten for kids. The dolphin show costs extra. Another fifteen. We paid for both. Why not?

The entrance hall is cool. Air conditioned. Thank god.

Outside, the Red Sea heat was already punishing. You walk through a dark corridor. Then suddenly – the tunnel.

The main tunnel: genuinely impressive

The tunnel is huge. Maybe 30 metres long. Curved glass above you. Around you.

Sharks swim overhead. Stingrays. Giant groupers.

The first time you look up, you stop walking. Everyone does.

The fish are close. Really close. A nurse shark passed two metres above my head. Its belly was pale. Smooth. I felt small.

My daughter pressed her face against the glass. She didn't move for five minutes.

The tunnel is the highlight. No question. You can walk through it slowly. Then again. Then again. We did it three times. The staff don't rush you. That's nice.

Other exhibits: hit and miss

Beyond the tunnel, there are smaller tanks. Coral reefs. Clownfish. Angelfish. Moray eels hiding in pipes.

The lighting is good. Labels in English and Arabic. Some facts are interesting. Some are basic.

The ray touch pool is popular. Shallow water. Small rays swim in circles. You can touch them. They feel like wet velvet. Slippery.

My daughter was scared at first. Then she touched one. Then she wouldn't leave. We spent twenty minutes there.

The jellyfish tank is beautiful. Lights change colour. Pink. Blue. Purple. The jellyfish float like tiny spaceships.

My wife took photos. Lots of photos. Most of them blurry. Jellyfish are hard to capture.

The downside? Some tanks look tired. The water isn't crystal clear in every exhibit. A few had algae on the glass. Staff were cleaning them. Slowly. You notice if you look closely.

The dolphin show: entertaining but short

The dolphin show happens in an outdoor pool. Seats are concrete steps.

Arrive early for a good spot. We arrived ten minutes before. Got seats near the front. Lucky.

The show lasted about thirty minutes. Dolphins jumped through hoops. Splashed the audience. Waved with their tails. Standard dolphin stuff.

The trainers spoke English and Russian. The crowd cheered. My daughter loved it. I found it fine. Not amazing. Not bad.

The dolphins look healthy. Active. The pool is large. Cleaner than I expected.

But thirty minutes feels short. For fifteen dollars extra, you want maybe forty-five minutes. Still, the kids don't care about value. They care about the splash.

Crowds and timing

We went on a Tuesday morning. Not peak season. Still busy.

The tunnel was crowded at 11am. Shoulder to shoulder with families. By 12pm, it was worse.

If you can, come at opening time. 9am. You'll have the tunnel mostly to yourself.

The aquarium gets very hot outside. The dolphin show is outdoors. No shade. Bring a hat. Sunscreen. Water. We forgot water. Paid three dollars for a small bottle inside. Daylight robbery. But you have no choice.

Facilities and extras

There's a cafe. Basic. Sandwiches. Drinks. Ice cream. Prices are high. A coke is four dollars. A sandwich is eight. We ate afterwards. Outside. Cheaper.

The gift shop is huge. Stuffed animals. T-shirts. Shells. Plastic sharks. Overpriced. A small dolphin toy was fifteen dollars. My daughter wanted it. I said no. She sulked. Then forgot.

Toilets are clean. Plenty of them. Changing tables for babies. Good for families.

The staff are friendly. They help with directions. No one pushed us to buy photos or extras. That was a relief.

Value for money

Twenty dollars for the aquarium alone. Fifteen extra for the dolphin show. Total thirty-five dollars per adult. Kids cheaper.

For a family of four, maybe eighty dollars. Not cheap. But compared to European aquariums? A similar experience in London or Berlin would cost double.

You get two to three hours of entertainment. The tunnel is world-class. The rest is decent. If you've never been to a big aquarium, you'll be impressed. If you have, you'll find it solid but not spectacular.

Should you go?

Look, the Grand Aquarium won't change your life. But it's a good way to spend a hot afternoon. The tunnel is genuinely cool. The dolphin show makes kids happy. The facilities are clean. The crowds are annoying but manageable.

If you're in Hurghada for a week, go. If you're here for beach and diving only, skip it. For families with young children? Yes. Definitely. My daughter still talks about the shark that swam over her head.

A flat here costs less than a deposit back home. And having a proper aquarium with a tunnel and dolphins in your city? Not bad for a Tuesday when the beach is too hot. Just saying.
