El Gouna city tour Hurghada: the drive

The van arrived. Late. Ten minutes. Normal.

We drove north. Thirty minutes. Desert turned green. Lagoons appeared. Blue. Calm. Pretty.

El Gouna is fake. Built from nothing. But beautiful. Canals. Bridges. Coloured buildings.

Thirty dollars. Transport. Downtown walk. Marina visit. Lagoon views. Good value.

Downtown Gouna: quiet and clean

We started downtown. Shops. Cafes. Art galleries. No crowds. No noise.

The streets were empty. Weekday morning. My wife liked it. 'No touts.' Rare in Egypt.

The downtown Gouna walk took thirty minutes. Enough. Small area. Cute. Not much else.

We saw a mosque. Modern design. Unusual. My son took a photo. 'For school.' Sure.

The Abu Tig Marina tour was next. Short drive.

Abu Tig Marina: yachts and expensive coffee

The marina is the heart of El Gouna. Restaurants. Shops. Yachts. Clean. Expensive.

We walked along the water. Big boats. White. Polished. My daughter asked if we could live on one. 'No.'

A coffee cost four dollars. A coke three. We skipped. Brought our own water.

The marina views were beautiful. Blue water. Palm trees. Colourful buildings. My wife took fifty photos.

The El Gouna lagoon views from the marina were postcard perfect. Even I took photos.

Lagoon views El Gouna: photo stops

The guide took us to three lagoon viewpoints. Each different. One with mangroves. One with a bridge. One with a tower.

The water was turquoise. Stupidly turquoise. Herons stood in the shallows. My son tried to get close. They flew away.

The Gouna city sightseeing was relaxed. No rush. No pressure. The guide spoke good English. Knew the history. 'Built in 1990s. 20 million square metres.' Facts.

We spent twenty minutes at each stop. Enough for photos. Not enough to get bored.

Small issues (real talk)

No lunch included. The marina has restaurants. Expensive. A burger? Twelve dollars. We ate back in Hurghada.

The tour felt short. Three hours. We wanted more time at the lagoon. The guide had a schedule.

No water taxi included. Extra cost. Ten dollars per person. We skipped. Walked instead.

The Abu Tig tour was nice but not exciting. If you want action, do a boat trip. This is for relaxing.

The driver spoke basic English. Fine for directions. The guide was better.

Gouna excursion value: worth thirty dollars?

Thirty dollars. Transport. Downtown walk. Marina visit. Three lagoon stops. Three hours.

For a family of four? One hundred twenty dollars. Plus lunch. One hundred fifty.

Cheaper than a hotel stay in El Gouna. A night there costs double.

The El Gouna downtown and marina tour is a good half-day escape. See the pretty side of Egypt. No hassle. No touts.

My family enjoyed it. My wife loved the photos. My son liked the herons. My daughter wanted a yacht. Maybe next life.

Should you book this city tour?

Look. If you want adventure, do a desert safari. If you want beach, stay at your hotel.

If you want a peaceful few hours in a pretty, clean, fake Venetian town? Do this.

The lagoons are beautiful. The marina is photogenic. The downtown is quiet.

Bring your own lunch. Eat before or after. The restaurants there are overpriced.

The tour is short. Three hours. Enough to see the highlights. Not enough to get bored.

My wife still looks at her photos. The turquoise water. The white yachts. The herons.

A flat here costs less than a deposit back home. And having a fake Venice with lagoons and yachts in your backyard? Not bad for a Tuesday. Just saying.
