Alf Leila Wa Leila Hurghada: what is it?

One Thousand and One Nights. That's the theme. Arabian tales. Scheherazade. Aladdin.

The venue? Huge. Built like a castle. Fake stone walls. Towers. Lights everywhere. You feel like you entered Disneyland. Egyptian version.

We arrived at 7pm. The bus was on time. Shocking. Forty dollars per person. Dinner included. Not cheap. But cheaper than Dubai.

The entrance is dramatic. Giant gates. Fake palm trees. Courtyard full of tables. Hundreds. We found ours. Near the stage. Lucky.

1001 Nights dinner show Hurghada: the food

Buffet opened at 7:30pm. We went early. Avoided the queue.

The food? Average. Rice. Grilled chicken. Kofta. Some vegetable thing. Salads. Hummus. Bread.

Nothing special. Edible. My daughter ate the chicken. Left the rice. My son ate bread. Just bread. Kids.

Dessert station had rice pudding. Baklava. Fresh fruit. The baklava was good. Sweet. Sticky. I had three pieces. My wife judged me. I didn't care.

Drinks not included. Water? Two dollars. Coke? Three. Beer? Five. We bought water. Skip the alcohol. Overpriced.

The food won't impress you. Keep expectations low. You'll be fine. The show is the point. Not the chicken.

Folklore spectacular Hurghada: the spinning

The show started. First up? Tanoura. A man in a colourful skirt. Spinning.

And spinning. And spinning.

The skirt lit up. Coloured lights. Red. Green. Blue. My daughter was mesmerized. Mouth open. Eyes wide.

The Tanoura dancer spun for ten minutes. Maybe fifteen. Felt longer. But impressive. He didn't get dizzy. I got dizzy watching. Had to look away.

Then the belly dancer. Professional. Sequins. Veils. Hip movements. My son covered his eyes. My wife laughed. The men in the audience cheered. The women clapped. Traditional.

The belly dancing Hurghada performance lasted twenty minutes. She invited a tourist up. A German man. Tried to copy her moves. Failed badly. Everyone laughed. He laughed too. Good fun.

Then the fire show. A man juggled flaming sticks. Breathed fire. The crowd gasped. My son loved it. Asked if we could try at home. I said no. Firmly.

Arabian nights entertainment: horses and stories

Between dances, actors performed scenes from 1001 Nights. Scheherazade telling stories. Aladdin and the lamp. Ali Baba.

The acting was basic. In Arabic. We didn't understand a word. But the costumes were good. Colourful. Elaborate. My wife took photos. Lots of photos.

Then the horses. Men on horses. Galloping around the arena. Jumping through hoops. Fake swords. Dramatic music.

My daughter asked if the horses were real. Yes. They looked well-treated. Not skinny. Clean. That was good to see.

The live entertainment continued until 10:30pm. Two and a half hours. Too long. My kids got tired around 10pm. We left early. Missed the finale. No regrets.

Hurghada folklore experience: worth forty dollars?

Forty dollars per person. Family of four? One hundred and sixty. Plus drinks. Almost two hundred.

For that price? You expect amazing. It's not amazing. It's good. Not great.

The costumes are impressive. The dancers are skilled. The venue is unique. But the food is average. The show is too long. The crowd is huge.

If you've never seen Egyptian folklore? Go. If you've been to similar shows in Turkey or Dubai? Skip. You've seen it before.

My kids enjoyed the fire show. And the horses. They forgot the belly dancer. They remembered the spinning man.

We took photos. Posted them. Friends commented. 'Looks exotic.' That's worth something.

Should you book Alf Leila Wa Leila show?

Look. This is a tourist show. Very touristy. No locals. Just visitors.

But it's well done. Professional. Organised. The venue is clean. The staff are friendly. The dancers are talented.

If you're in Hurghada for a week and want a night out? Go. If you're on a budget? Skip. Spend the money on a boat trip instead.

My daughter still talks about the spinning man. My son remembers the fire. I remember the baklava. Three pieces. No shame.

A flat here costs less than a deposit back home. And having a 1001 Nights castle with fire shows in your backyard? Not bad for a Thursday night. Just saying.
