Continue Browsing TripsMahmya Island luxury snorkeling cruise from Hurghada. Premium private beach experience for $50-70? Looks good on paper. Reality check: still crowded, average food and overpriced drinks. Honest review from someone who's lived here 10+ years.
The pickup was late. Naturally. They always are.
We waited twenty minutes in the hotel lobby before the van finally showed up. But once we reached the marina and the yacht pulled away, that warm Red Sea breeze hit my face, carrying the usual mix of salt and faint diesel. For a second it almost felt worth the wait.
I've been living in Hurghada for over ten years. I've done the Mahmya Island luxury snorkeling cruise enough times to know exactly what you're getting. They call it "premium" and "luxury". Well, it's better than the standard boats, but let's not get carried away.
The first snorkeling stop was decent. The water was clear and there were more fish than usual around the coral. The crew actually seemed to know what they were doing. They helped people with the gear without too much fuss.
But here's the thing that always winds me up. Even on the so-called luxury boats, they still pack them in. You end up sharing the deck with large groups and their endless chatter. The music? Same repetitive Egyptian pop on loop. The music was loud, I forgot my earplugs. By the second hour I was seriously considering swimming the rest of the way.
To be fair, the private beach area is noticeably better than Orange Bay or Hula Hula. The sand is softer, the water is calmer, and there's a bit more space to spread out. You get longer time on the island, which is the main reason most people choose Mahmya.
Lunch is a step up from the basic boats. Grilled fish, chicken, rice, decent salads. Still boat food though. Nothing you'll remember next week. And yes, the drinks are still ridiculously overpriced. Four dollars for a small bottle of water. Daylight robbery as usual.
The second snorkel spot can be quite good if the conditions are right. Some days the visibility is excellent and you see nice coral. Other days it's average at best. That's just how it goes with these Red Sea trips.
Overall, the Mahmya Island luxury snorkeling cruise delivers a noticeably better beach experience than the cheaper options. The "premium private beach" marketing is a bit exaggerated, but it is calmer and cleaner than the usual spots. If you're willing to pay the extra money for more space and slightly better service, it's one of the better choices.
A flat here costs less than a garage back home, and this sort of day out is basically your weekend routine if you live in Hurghada. Just saying.
